![]() ![]() We’re quickly involved in Stella’s experience, her relationship with Marco and memories of childhood. The characters are accessible and sympathetic. ![]() ![]() On the positive side, this story features Pinsker’s trademark style. Did his stories predict the future? Or did they cause it to happen? Uncle Bob was a little creepy and told stories about how children went wrong while local children played in the background on the set. Intrigued, Stella does some research at the local TV station and obtains some old tapes of the Uncle Bob Show. Later at her parents’ house, her mom says Stella was on the show, too. She thinks she’s made it all up the way she makes a lot of lies up, but Marco actually remembers that Denny was on the show. They haul a lot of stuff out in garbage bags, and just on an impulse, Stella asks about a kids show they all watched as kids. The place is stuffed full and the kitchen stinks. ![]() Stella arrives in her home town for the funeral, and sympathetic to Marco’s grief, offers to help him clean out Denny’s house. Denny started to get weird when they were kids, and in his latter years, he was a big hoarder. Sarah Pinsker is very well established as a writer, a perennial awards nominee and a Director for the SFWA. This fantasy/horror novelette is a finalist for the 2020 Nebula Award. ![]()
